Su Yin Chan, D.M.A., enjoys a diverse musical career as a performer and educator. She has performed in both national and international stages such as the Chicago Symphony Center, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C, Boston Symphony Hall, Tokyo Opera City, and Seoul Arts Center. Some of the musical luminaries she has performed alongside include Yo-Yo Ma, Riccardo Muti, Emmanuel Ax, Jaap van Zweden, and she has also played with many notable ensembles such as the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Silk Road Ensemble, Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra and Palaver Strings. In 2020, Dr. Chan completed her Doctoral studies with her thesis "Tradition and Innovation: Romanian Folk Music and Musical Notation in George Enescu's Violin Sonata No.3", under the guidance of Professors Bayla Keyes, Justin Casinghino, and Lorena Tecu of Boston University.

As an educator, Dr. Chan has had over 10 years of experience teaching students from all ages and backgrounds, ranging from young children, to college students, to older adults wanting to jump start their musical journey. As a violin and viola instructor at Sharon Music Academy in Massachusetts, she has taught a number of young children, many of whom have received recognition in various competitive and performing arenas, such as winning top prizes in Crescendo International Competitions and Little Mozart competitions, as well as successfully auditioning for State and District Orchestra Festivals for many consecutive years. As part of the education initiative with Palaver Strings, Dr. Chan has led workshops on effective musical practice as well as chamber music communication skills in local music programs in the Boston and Rockport public schools. As a graduate teaching assistant at Boston University, she helped teach and guide string technique sessions for the undergraduate class of Professor Bayla Keyes.

Beyond performing and teaching, Dr. Chan is passionate about exploring how music enriches and brings communities together. Formerly a core violinist and Co-Artistic Director of Boston-based String Orchestra “Palaver Strings”, she was involved in various community projects such as the Boston Chapter of Carnegie Hall's Lullaby Project and Palaver's Lifesongs Project. These are both song-writing projects with professional musicians who write original songs with participants: lullabies for expectant mothers in challenging life circumstances, and songs of life stories from older adults in the LGBTQ community respectively. Back in her native country of Malaysia, Dr. Chan grew up being involved in performing and raising funds for various charitable child organizations. Despite studying abroad for many years, she continues to perform solo recitals and benefit concerts to promote deeper musical understanding and social awareness of the importance of the arts in Malaysia.

Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Su Yin started playing piano and violin from a young age. Following the footsteps of her cousins, her early music lessons were under the instruction of her late aunt. After her first youth orchestra experience with the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra in 2006, Su Yin realized her passion for sharing music and decided to pursue a career in music. A graduate of DePaul and Boston Universities, Su Yin has served as concertmaster and fellow at Garth Newel Music Center, Manchester Music Festival, Roundtop Music Festival, Brevard Music Festival as well as a Guest Artist with Bay Chamber Concerts Screen Door Festival. She has participated in solo masterclasses by Joseph Silverstein, James Buswell, William Preucil, Gerrado Ribeiro, including extensive chamber music studies with Robbie Merfeld and the Muir String Quartet. She is immensely grateful to her primary violin teachers Bayla Keyes, Janet Sung, and Liu Jian for their patience and guidance, moulding her into the expressive artist she is today.
